A review on a few of my latest reads.
Now that my university assignment is over I have been finding it hard to find the time to sit down and blog, sorry for the hiatus! Because of this I thought I should round up my thoughts on my latest reads in one blog post. Although I haven’t had the time to blog, I’ve found the time to read! So here is a quick review of the latest books I’ve been reading.
A Street Cat Named Bob – James Bowen
This book was lent to me by my boyfriend’s mum and had she not lent it to me I think it would have been one of those books that I had heard about but never picked up. It was on my reading list for ages and when I first started reading, the style of writing threw me a bit as I haven’t read many real life accounts. After I got used to the style I found it really easy to read and really interesting. I finished the book very quickly after I started eager to find out what happened to them both.
Not only is it about a special cat and the friendship he forms with homeless James, James also talks openly about his other struggles such as drug dependency, how people treat him begin homeless, etc. and I found myself really rooting for the pair of them.
It is a really lovely (real life) story and very easy to read, I have heard that there are follow up books which I will most likely read to see how the pair of them are getting on as you take such a liking to both Bob and James that you want everything to turn out well for the pair of them.
The Kite Runner – Khaled Hosseini
Having read ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns’ and it being one of my Top 5 books, I had high hopes for another book by the same author. This was another one lent to me by my boyfriend’s mum which was also sitting on my to be read pile for ages! Like with all the other books I’ve read recently once I got into it, it was hard to put down.
The story was incredible sad but also eye opening. I had no idea what went on in Afghanistan and this book does something to shed light on what it is like to live in a country at war. The story is gripping and has some huge twists which I never anticipated!
This book really is well worth reading, I’m not sure I enjoyed it as much as A Thousand Splendid Suns but it is a very good book and a book that I will remember.
The Women in Cabin 10 – Ruth Ware
My mum and I saw this book reviewed in Heat magazine a while ago, I would check out their review section if you are looking for ideas, more often than not the books they review are really good! Anyway she saw it on offer and brought it, read it, lent it to my Grandma and then to me and now I’m passing it on to others as well!
I didn’t expect to get as into this book as I did, it grabs your attention right at the very beginning of the book. The opening chapter had me gripped and from then on it just carries on with the twists and turns and mystery.
Although there are lots of different characters and twists, it isn’t confusing to follow – just hard to put down! If I had one criticism of this book it is that some of the authors descriptions can become a little bit repetitive, but I may have only notice it as I was reading massive chunks of the book in one go! I was so hooked I had it finished in less than a week!
The story follows travel journalist Lo Blacklock as she gets what she thinks is the opportunity of a lifetime to board a luxury cruise with a handful of cabins hoping to see the Northern Lights. Something happens on board that leaves her in trouble and second guessing everything and everyone on board. I don’t want to say too much about it as I don’t want to give anything away, but I would 100% recommend this book to anyone even if you aren’t a fan of mysteries it really is worth a read.
So, that’s what I have been reading during my break from blogging. At the moment I haven’t picked anything else up as I’m working on trying to fill my spare time with exercise to improve my fitness (it isn’t going great!). I have a trip booked to go to Wales and climb Snowdon at the beginning of August, but hopefully in the meantime I’ll have read something else and not take a long a break as this time!

I keep looking at “A Street Cat Named Bob”, and wondering about reading it. I feel like I need to read the book before watching the movie (although I understand the owner of the cat, and the real cat are in the movie).

That’s what I thought, I haven’t got round to watching the film but hopefully I will do soon! You should read it though it is a good one 🙂
